Animals

ANIMALS: Most animals in the desert are not dangerous, but there are a few that are and should be mentioned here.

  • Rattlesnake - poisonous, but not usually deadly to adults. One exception is the Green Mojave rattlesnake, which is almost always deadly.
  • Scorpion - There is only one species of Scorpion in the North American Deserts that is deadly. It's the small one, too! The large ones hurt, but are not life-threatening. Most people get into trouble with scorpions because they don't check their shoes before putting them on.
  • Gila Monster (a large lizard) - The only way to get into trouble with this animal is to harass it.
  • Mountain Lion or Cougar - They have been known to stalk children. They are found in desert areas that are adjacent to high mountains, as well as the mountains themselves.
  • Javelina (wild boar) - If you see one javelina, don't worry, it'll run away as fast as its little legs will carry it. On the other hand, if you see a group of them, especially if they have piglets, stay away!
  • Bears - Ocasionally found in areas that are adjacent to high mountains, as well as the mountains themselves.
  • Killer Bees - Generally not dangerous unless harassed. Most people that get into trouble with these bees are trying to remove their hive.
  • Centipedes - A nasty bite, but not life-threatening. Most Centipede bites result when people are clearing wood or rubbish, which disturbs their habitat and pisses them off!
