Human Waste in the Desert

Liquid Waste:  It doesn’t really matter where your liquid waste goes, as long as you are AT LEAST 200 feet from any water sources, trails, campsites or people.

Solid Waste:  At or beyond the minimum 200 foot limit, dig a small “cat-hole” 4 to 6 inches deep and about as wide.  Try to use as little paper as possible.  If you have a fire back at camp, burn the toilet paper.  Wash up with soap and water or baby wipes when you’re done: clean is comfortable!

  • Fill the hole(s) in and, if possible, place a rock over each filled hole to keep animals from digging.
  • Think ahead:  Always have your supplies at the ready!  Dig your holes in the evening, so when that freight train comes through in the morning, you’ll be ready!
  • Children under 8 years old should be assisted to be sure they bury everything properly.  Children over 8 years old should be taught the procedure.
  • Many areas have a regulation that says you MUST have a portable toilet along.  Again, it is your responsibility to know the rules.  Many people PREFER to have the portable toilet.
