Plant Specimens Laws vary from state to state and plant to plant on what plants and plant products are allowed to be taken. Some are either illegal to collect or require a permit. Check with the owner of the land and then check the state laws that apply to that type of land and plant. For example, you want to know if you can take Mammilaria cacti from Ironwood Forest National Monument, Arizona. The answer is NO, because Ironwood Forest does not allow the taking of any plants. If you wanted to take the same plant from BLM public domain lands in Arizona, you could, but you would need a permit from the State Dept. of Agriculture. Many species of plants can be taken from BLM public domain lands without a permit.
