Campsites

Some areas, even on BLM land, require a permit.  You are responsible for knowing the rules.  Minimize your camping impact by:

  • Using an established campsite whenever possible.
  • Bringing sacks to carry out all trash that cannot be COMPLETELY burned.
  • Camping at least 200 feet away from desert water sources (especially springs), so you won’t interfere with wildlife that depend on the water for survival.  Also, camp away from trails.
  • Using a gas stove for cooking, to minimize your impact on the scarce desert wood supply.
  • Selecting a campsite where you don’t need to clear away vegetation or level a tent site.  Never trench around tents: that can start soil erosion and doesn’t work anyway.
  • Scouting the area before leaving camp to be sure you have left nothing behind.  Try to make it appear as if no one had used the site, unless the campsite was already established when you arrived.
