2. Find your Desert Expert by geographic area. There are four major desert areas in North America. Below is a short description of each of them. For more complete descriptions, Click here.

Mojave Desert: Entirely within the USA, the Mojave covers parts of eastern and southeastern California, parts of southwestern Utah, southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona.

Chihuahuan Desert: The largest of the North American deserts. Covers parts of west Texas, southern New Mexico, southeastern Arizona and parts of the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Durango, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosi.

Sonoran Desert: Covers most of southern Arizona, southeastern California and parts of the Mexican states of Sonora, Baja California Norte and Baja California Sur.

Great Basin Desert: Entirely within the USA, the Great Basin Desert covers most of the state of Nevada, western and southern Utah, parts of eastern California, southwestern Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, northeastern Arizona, southern Idaho and southeastern Oregon. Not to be confused with the Basin and Range, a geologic province that covers a much larger area. Some desert experts divide the Great Basin desert into two sub-categories: the "Great Basin" and "Colorado Plateau" deserts.
